Medical studies

During the past 40 years, extensive research has been done into the effects of infrared therapy.

In Japan, there is even an ‘Infrared Society’, a group of doctors, scientists and physical therapists that are convinced of the healthful benefits of infrared radiation and they have performed a great deal of research into these effects.

But many studies related to the result of treatment with infrared light have also been published in the United States.

Beneficial effects

"The effect of a Health Mate® infrared sauna is not a hocus pocus. Medical studies show that it works."

Good for people with autism

Generating the right energy!

A study published by the authoritative Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) indicates that children with autism often have difficulty metabolising energy at the cellular level.

They also suffer more frequently from diminished vascular circulation in certain parts of the brain. Since an infrared sauna markedly improves circulation, these children are greatly helped by these saunas.

Preventing cardiovascular diseases

Boost your quality of life

The American cardiologist, Joel Kahn recently said that infrared saunas are “probably one of the most significant ways to prevent heart and vascular disease.”
Kahn compiled much of his evidence from his Japanese colleagues, who call infrared therapy ‘waon’ therapy (wa = to relieve, on = heat).
They studied 129 cardiac patients who, twice per week, spent fifteen minutes in an infrared sauna at 60°C
and then spent the next 30 minutes outside the sauna wrapped in towels sweating it out.
For five years, these patients were compared with heart patients who did nothing.
The researchers saw improvements in the function of the endothelial cells, which are primarily found on the inside of the heart and blood vessels,
of the patients in the first group.
The patients who did not participate in the infrared course of treatment were admitted to hospital twice as often and also died twice as frequently within the study period.
Joel Kahn’s conclusion: “It appears that a sauna a day keeps both the heart attack and the doctor away.”

Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis

50% less pain

During treatment with infrared saunas, all patients showed a clinically relevant improvement in pain levels
and a reduction of between 5 and 24 points on the joint stiffness scale.
In patients with rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, the pain was lessened
by approximately 40% and 60%, respectively, and the stiffness by 50% and 60%, respectively.
All of the patients felt good during and after the infrared treatment.
Thirty minutes after the end of the treatment, 88.2% of the patients reported feeling “comfortable” or “very comfortable”.
The results of this study show that the use of an infrared sauna as therapy is feasible
and is well tolerated by patients with inflammatory arthritis.

Reduces Loss of Appetite and Moderately Depressed Patients

Away with mental & physical complaints!

Physical and psychological symptoms are reduced in moderately depressed patients,
and a relaxation effect is seen after repeated heat therapy.
Furthermore, we also discovered that the appetite returned and that the plasma concentrations of ghrelin
and the daily calorie consumption increased after repeated heat therapy.

Patients with heart failure

Improvement of heart function

Repeated infrared sauna therapy (at 60°C for 15 minutes) improved the haemodynamic parameters, the clinical symptoms,
the cardiac function and the vascular endothelial function in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) […]
Sauna therapy improved the cardiac index, the average pulmonary wedge pressure, the systemic and pulmonary vascular resistance and the cardiac function.
Sauna treatments are considered safe for CHF patients in NYHA classes I, II and III.
It appears that sauna treatments may help to improve clinical symptoms and haemodynamic parameters
in addition to improving the endothelial cell function in CHF patients with abnormal endothelial function.
