HRV (Heart Rate Variability) is the variation between successive heartbeats. A higher HRV is generally linked to a flexible nervous system that can switch smoothly between exertion and recovery. A lower HRV is more often seen with stress, fatigue, lack of sleep or illness.
This switching between exertion and recovery takes place in our autonomic nervous system, which consists of two systems. The sympathetic nervous system is the accelerator: it makes us alert and ready for action. The parasympathetic nervous system is the brake: it supports recovery, relaxation and sleep. The more smoothly your body can switch between the two, the higher your HRV tends to be. HRV therefore mainly reflects how well that switching works, not simply how stressed you are at any given moment.
Work, screens, traffic and everyday worries keep our nervous system in a state of readiness. As a result, we feel tired but struggle to find rest. Heat therapy can break that pattern. Although heat feels relaxing, it first acts as a controlled stimulus for the body: blood vessels widen, the heart rate rises and the body actively works to release heat. A recovery response then follows, during which the heart rate drops and the nervous system shifts more towards relaxation. Research into sauna use shows that HRV often increases during this recovery phase: heat, in effect, teaches the body to switch between strain and recovery again.
That recovery response also works in your favour in the evening. Anyone still in ‘action mode’ often finds it harder to fall asleep, and stress and sleep are closely linked. By warming the body first, its natural cooling afterwards is stimulated. That drop in body temperature is part of the process by which our body prepares for sleep. Studies suggest that a heat session one to two hours before bedtime can contribute to falling asleep faster and better sleep quality. Heat, recovery and sleep thus reinforce one another.
A Health Mate infrared sauna is designed to warm the body comfortably using long-wave infrared. At Health Mate, the temperature is deliberately kept between 45 and 55°C: mild enough to sustain a 30 to 45 minute session without it feeling unpleasant or putting strain on the body, quite different from the intense heat of a classic sauna or a mid-wave infrared cabin. This combination of comfort and effectiveness is the founding philosophy of Health Mate, built on three pillars: Great health, Genius design and Guaranteed quality.
Ultimately, it comes down to one simple principle: good recovery isn't a luxury, but an essential foundation for your overall health and resilience.
